Location

The Institute began its activity in October 2007 with a small management structure and set up its basic equipment in premises assigned by the Autonomous University of Madrid. In 2008 researchers started to join and the first projects were launched. Between 2010 and 2013 the IMDEA Food Institute was located in areas of the CLAID in the Science Park of Madrid. On July 30, 2012, the Consejería de Educación y Empleo of the Comunidad de Madrid (Order 9141/2012) granted the administrative concession of the Central Hall of the old Hospital of Cantoblanco to the IMDEA Food Institute Foundation for use as its permanent headquarters. In January 2014, once the process of adapting the building to the needs of an experimental research centre had been carried out, the IMDEA Food Institute took up residence in this building.

Located in the natural setting of the Mount of Valdelatas, the Central Pavilion of the Hospital of Cantoblanco was built at the beginning of the 20th century under the auspices of the Royal Central Board of Clinics and Anti-tuberculosis Institutions. It was opened in 1917 by the King and Queen Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia. During its early years, it was the first sanatorium for poor people with TB in Madrid, and was named the Victoria Eugenia Royal Anti-Tuberculosis Popular Sanatorium.

The work carried out by the Comunidad de Madrid in 2010 preserved the original façade of the building, adding a longitudinal body on its northern side, with glazed façade and overlapping wooden lattices, to provide it with more floor space and functionality. On the south side its original exposed brick architecture, hollows and decorative elements have been retained.

The building boasts 4,595 m2 distributed over five floors: basement, ground floor, first floor, second floor and a rooftop floor. It can accommodate eight laboratories, two areas of general and scientific infrastructure, 52 closed offices, 26 open workstations, one consultancy room, one waiting room, one studio, one function hall, three meeting rooms, two training classrooms, a dining room, a reception area, a concierge's office and a general facilities room.
