This research group focuses on the study of the dietary components function as microRNA modulators, emphasizing on dietary components of the Traditional Mediterranean Diet (TMD) and microRNAs related to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Obesity. microRNAs have recently emerged as important modulators of key metabolic pathways associated to the development of CVD and Obesity. Thus, to further understand the precise mechanisms by which microRNAs modulate these pathways is fundamental to prevent the development of CVD. Diet is one of the main factors contributing to CVD and obesity and, furthermore, it is an easily modifiable factor. TMD is a powerful tool to prevent the development of CVD and obesity. Therefore, the study of the role of different components of the TMD as modulators of cardiovascular-related microRNAs is needed to contribute to the use of TMD as a preventive therapy against CVD and obesity. Within the field of dietary modulated microRNAs, this group also studies the chronobiology, microbiota and the gut-brain axis effects on CVD and Obesity traits. Moreover, this research team is interested in the role of circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of CVD and healthy diet.

These research interests are addressed through different approaches including basic and applied research. In vitro studies allow the characterization of the molecular mechanisms involved in the dietary modulation of cardiovascular-related microRNAs. Studies in mice models, both wild type and genetically modified, allow the determination of the effect of the directional genetic ablation of microRNAs on metabolic homeostasis and cardiovascular health. Finally, the team participates in a number of  human studies with healthy volunteers and CVD patients to understand the effect of different dietary habits and interventions on plasma microRNA profile.
