Dr. Pablo José-Fernandez-Marcos studied Biochemistry in the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. He obtained his PhD with a Special PhD Award under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Serrano in the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), publishing 8 research articles. He then worked with Professor Johan Auwerx, at the École Politechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), studying mouse models of metabolic alterations and publishing 5 articles. Two years later he returns to the CNIO, combining mouse models of cancer and metabolic studies and publishing 8 new articles. He has authored a total of 21 articles in journal as Journal of Clinical Investigation, PNAS, Nature Communications, EMBO Journal, Cell or Cancer Cell.
Dr. Fernandez-Marcos research is focused on the identification and characterization of new compounds and extracts isolated from food, with bioactive potential against metabolic syndrome (obesity and diabetes). He is mainly interested in signaling pathways of insulin-PI3K, mitochondrial activity and the adipocyte "browning" process. For this, he makes use of high throughput screening platforms for the isolation of new compounds, cell culture methods for the molecular characterization and animal models for the physiological validation of the isolated compounds.
